Angela LeggettSaves Nine
|
2011 › CIF › BFA (Fashion) Making reference to the time old adage “a stitch in time saves nine”, the pieces comprising nine outfits pay homage to domestic craftsmanship marginalised within conventional contemporary fashion processes and paradigms. Saves Nine preserves traditional finishing and embellishment techniques through applying them to contemporary garments. My studio practice embraces a slow fashion philosophy, both in terms of labour intensive techniques and sustainable materials. Garments are made from undyed natural Australian organic cotton, bamboo, silk, wool and organic cotton lace. Saves Nine also refers to nine unfinished samplers embroidered by Australian girls and women during the 19th and 20th centuries, which inspired the embroidery designs on belts which recur throughout my collection. Given this narrative element, as well as the intricate details, finishes and surface treatments, my works are not merely wearable fashion items, but also treasurable art craft objects designed to stand the test of time.
