2011 › CIF › BFA (Visual Arts) World Press Photo 2010 acts as one document in a growing archive of information and publicity material extracted from within the arts industry. The work deals with notions of primary and secondary material, connecting different locations, sites and memories. Acting as a documentation of an external site, World Press Photo 2010 makes direct reference to a previous Brisbane exhibition. The artist’s process of collection plays an important role in emphasising the simultaneous presence of viewer and creator in the past. Material abstraction reduces the information systems inherent to the catalogue, creating an exclusive connection to the original material through audience participation in and memory of local art events.
Seth Siegelaub’s ideas on the primary and secondary material of an art experience are a key reference for this work. World Press Photo 2010 establishes a relationship to Siegelaub’s catalogues concerning the reception and publicity of Conceptual Art in the 1960’s. Removing the original function of the material further displaces the exhibition catalogue and creates an aesthetic reduction of its content. Website |
