Softscapes is derived from research of ownership, materiality, softness, intimacy, home and identity. Public space lacks the intimate connection individuals usually have with their homes. Challenging existing functions of Roma St Transit Center, Softscapes allows passengers to experience a deeper connection to site through intimacy and domesticity. Lounging, sleeping, showering and gardening are integrated within. The structure is inspired by the soft yet complex materiality of foam and explores different scales in relation to the body. The main structure is inspired from high density foam on a micro-scale level. The complex and interlocking web provides negative pockets of space for users to occupy. These pockets of habitation are infused with the ambience of liquid foam; using an elastic skin as an interactive barrier for privacy and function. Light filtration occurs throughout the web, creative an evocative and comforting space. Together, these qualities will challenge the existing conduct of public space.
