The Cheshire

2007 › BEE › Bachelor of Built Environment (Industrial Design) The whimsical nature of proportions in Alice in Wonderland provided one of the major influences in the design of the Cheshire.
The idea came from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in which Alice is significantly dwarfed by the large seat in which she sits. The design for this chair similarly aspired to remain classical in form; however its grand sense of scale is inevitably quirky and humorous. The unlikely combination of the traditional and risqué led to the striking contrast of fishnet and damask being used. These two fabrics could not be further apart in the perceived usage and evocations that each material holds with a given audience. They challenge the traditions of upholstery and aesthetic by creating a unique unity in this composition. The clash was by all means intentional and it was realised that from the chair’s beginning it would raise a few eyebrows. The name therefore, inevitably perpetuated from the wacky conversations between Alice and the Cheshire Cat – and so the name was conceived – "The Cheshire". Project Team
