The project is a response to issues of density and loss of community in inner-suburban Brisbane. The master plan proposes inserting residential accommodation into the existing backyard landscape and small extensions to community based-program on the New Farm block. The concepts defining an architectural response to the challenge of building in the backyard include buildings as garden walls and picturesque strategies of manipulating terrain and building to idealise the presence of nature for all future occupants.
