2011 › BEE › Bachelor Design (Interior Design) The main conceptual frameworks of this project are spatial elasticity and the threads of memory. The idea of memory and remembering stemmed from an initial concept exploring the connection between our internal and external landscapes and how these two dimensions are interconnected and interdependent. The mind and body are indissolubly one.
As we design and build physical structures, we are simultaneously creating mental structures and realities. Juhani Pallasmaa believes that the physical settings we build constitute an uninterrupted continuum with our inner world. The creation of discrete boundaries is formed through the cyclical interplay of spatial dimension creating an experiential interaction of mind and body, altering perception and observation. The hope is that the space will both convey and absorb memory while it repopulates, resurrects and evolves. As a performative space, the theatre must allow the audience to penetrate. By blurring the boundaries of illusion and reality, this results in a space which is both an act and an art. Architecture uses the surface like a terrain for mapping out what is remembered, known and felt about being close to another person. Fundamentally, human memory is part of place and place is a dimension of human memory. The movement and interaction of both user and media stimulates an exploration of boundaries and alters perception. The density, intensity and layering create a shift in perception and the static strings appear fluid. Perception sharpens and blurs the structural and non-structural aspects of space. Through interaction with reflections and shadows, the people craft projected structure. Collisions of the physical, visual and psychological traces and memories are moulded by light, reflections and shadow. This results in constant creation and re-creation of memory and spatial understanding. The space extends over the body and encases it within an experience of synaesthetic, lucid and obscure perception just as the body extends over space and the mind extends over a memory. There is an intangible enigma of human behaviour. |
