‘In the built environment, if shadow is dependent on light, and unfolding must dependent of the presence of the fold, can the site be dependent on the user? Can they concurrently adapt to one another, causing dynamic rather than static person-environment interactions?’

Unfolding Shadows began as an exploration of theory in response to an open project brief. Through observations and research, conclusions were drawn between light and shadow, folding and unfolding, and people and environment. Thorough experimentation and exploration was critical in translating the theory into application / occupation and as a result, folding and unfolding paper and cardboard structures epitomized the theory in a 3D form. Taking this into the built environment, Brisbane’s Goodwill Bridge proved to be the most effective context for the occupation of the folded forms due to the prevalence of natural light and motion. The design was developed in response to the potential for spatial intervention and habitation on the Bridge, other than for thoroughfare.

By proposing that a cafe be interwoven in the fabric of the folding structure, Brisbane’s Goodwill Bridge has the potential to become an iconic destination for urban dwellers, with a prime location, amid a smooth transitional environment. Cafe Patrons and Bridge pedestrians alike are welcomed into the space via the activation of the folded sails. This activation is triggered by light sensors, causing the environment to adapt to the users presence, just as the user responds to the site via the stairs, the view, or enjoying a coffee. As part of inhabiting the site, users are invited to fold their own chair, whilst waiting for their coffee to be made. Programmed for varied interpretations, the site is a destination where people can enjoy prime river views amid a restful and inviting environment. The design answers the brief in creating destination in a transitional environment, connecting users with the river, each other and framing perspectives; ultimately instilling the value of the Goodwill Bridge as a destination back into the hearts of its users.
