The Herringbone

2007BEEBachelor of Built Environment (Interior Design)

In the context of design, the notion of encasement draws parallels between the elements of built form and human physiology. Historically architecture has drawn inspiration from human skeletal structure for centuries, inspired by this approach ‘Herringbone’ operates as a contemporary reinterpretation of this conceptual directive.

Conceptually ‘Herringbone’ explores an aesthetic formal quality, reflective of abstracted rib cage structures. The piece is a unique interpretation of an everyday object blurring the line between functional object and post-modern sculptural form.

Bent wood production methods were employed to construct the central curved plane of the piece, while the surface of this plane is finished in timber veneer. The design is completed with heat molded feature panels, made from acrylic and fine cotton fibres.
