Jacina LeongYellow House

2009CIFBFA (Visual Arts)

Yellow House developed in reaction to my (previous) use and considerations of the concept and image of a house as a symbolic means to locate familial identity. This work sought to question and play with my considerations and assumptions about these concepts and would be used as a costume to stage a satirical performance. At the time I was also researching performance work(s) in which artists alternated between a composed (feminine) self and an identity affected by hysteria. I began to wonder about the nature of the feminine and in particular the idea of the female as hysteric and spectacle and how these constructions of the feminine might operate in Yellow House. So the work also developed the idea of using costume as a means to investigate and perform the female spectacle.
