In the past, residual spaces have been appropriated by alternative creative arts activities that have led to the identity that the Valley has today. The sense of place that is created within the Valley is a product of the history of the area, and how this has influenced development and built form over time. Residual spaces are persistent in the Valley and their reasons for existence are often largely ignored.

This project celebrates the growing film and television industry within Queensland and Australia, and the Museum and School for Film & Sound presents an opportunity for a direct interaction between the internal program and the surrounding community – blurring the boundaries between public and private space.

The building contains four key areas, public workshop, sound-scape, performance space and an interactive corridor that ties each of these spaces together. In an effort to control the flow of public through the building – spaces are firstly carved into the fabric of the site to direct movement and to create unique experiences for each of its users.
