2011 › BEE › Bachelor Design (Landscape Architecture) Bridge_Meet_Ground is a speculative intervention which aims to re-imagine the neglected and 'left-over' spaces created by the intersections of infrastructures. In Brisbane the edge between the iconic river and the heart of the city is interrupted by the brutal serpentine freeway. A study of this edge revealed a series of 'under-spaces' at the point where bridge meets ground, which offer unique spatial and social qualities within the urban context. A site was then chosen in which these under-spaces could become catalysts to improve a neglected and forgotten part of the city.
The combined effects of light, sound, air and moisture create unique climatic and spatial niches; the project aims to build on these existing conditions to create spaces for occupation and public life. Thus the project emerges from and is stimulated by the under-spaces; using these ‘grafted’ projects as a stimulus for a broader strategy of road reclamation for public space. |
