2009 › BEE › Bachelor of Design (Architectural Studies) Town planning regulations of the past have seen the proliferation of 6 pack unit developments in inner suburban Brisbane. This type of attached dwelling offered a medium density housing solution, but failed largely in addressing street and ground plane connections.
By re-evaluating property boundaries and removing ground plane divisions, 6 packs can be reconnected both visually and physically with their topology. Corridors are created across the city grid that challenge notions of public and private. Thresholds are explored through minimal intervention with the existing built infrastructure. Water is stored, solar power is collected and people farm a proportion of their own food. Life becomes a play observed by everyone where production and consumption are understood. A nostalgic reference is made to the aesthetic of Brisbane’s past, evoking a time when fences were low and you knew your neighbours. This project celebrates diversity and believes that people have the ability to learn from each other. Sustainability is not only environmental, but social and psychological as well. |
