FINAL COLLECTION

A Kaleidoscopic Perspective’ invites the voyeur to experience the worldview perspective through the conceptual lens of a kaleidoscope. Representative of a diametrically opposed perspective, this collection systematically seeks to deconstruct this intriguing object. It seeks to lure the viewer into a world full of miraculous structural formations, distortions and illusions, whilst highlighting the notion of impermanence and continual change, bringing people to question reality itself. The three components of the Kaleidoscope that serve as the conceptual background behind this collection feature:

1. Structural Geometric Formations: Intriguing structural pattern formations are very influential in the conceptual development behind the collection. Similar forms and patterns found in a kaleidoscope can be found in nature and man made structures. A collection of photographic images I shot from around the world form the foundations of the digital engineered print work.

2. Distortions and Illusions: The ubiquity of the kaleidoscope as a metaphor for modern life requires little if any introduction. The idea of bizarre jumbled images in disarray, as a sign of fragmentation of modern life and or the loss of reality is a familiar metaphoric conception to us all. A strong series of my own images have been carefully dissected and digitally engineered to the body in a bid to create a transparent illusion of the body.

3. Change: There is the notion that modernity’s constant and rapid change is captured and reflected in the ever-changing images generated by this magical apparatus. This extends from the fact that objects are multi faceted, never existing in one state at one moment in time. Nothing is ever as it seems, differing light refractions and angles lead to ever-changing shapes and light conditions at different times of day. This feeling of change, loss of time and impermanence, has been infiltrated into the development of the garments. Shadows appear and change as light hits protruding portions and reflect off the sculptural nature and embellishment on the garment, expressing the beauty and evolution of the creations.

These essential characteristics are clearly evidenced through the multi dimensional garments, and the experimental fabrications and finishes. Some of which include the extensive application of laser cutting, digital engineered print design and the development of new textiles.
